Happy New Year!
December 31, 2009
Martin

Taiwan's capital started the year 2010 with its traditional Taipei 101 fireworks, a short but amazing spectacle.

The area around the world's tallest skyscraper (looks like the financial crisis is buying us another few years in this regard) was more crowded than last year, but I still managed to find a little spot to put up my camera and shoot some firework pictures for the first time with my D-SLR. Given that I had no idea what I was doing and only had about two minutes to experiment I'm quite happy with the outcome.

I'll upload more photos to my gallery as soon as I get to process them (maybe together with the Switzerland photos that have been in the queue for the last four months :-). Until then here are three of my favorite pictures I took last night, directly from the camera.

Happy New Year to everybody!

In case you're wondering what the "Taiwan UP" stands for, we've had the same discussion last night. Ideas went from "Up into the sky is where the money gets shot during the fireworks" to simply "up yours", but it seems the correct interpretation is that 2010 is the year where the economy recovers and life goes up again. I like this idea. Let's drink to that!

Nutcracker
December 27, 2009
Coco

Bike trip to 宇老 (Yu lao)
November 2, 2009
Martin

Today a few people from work decided to try their luck and go up to 宇老 (Yu lao) starting from 內灣 (Nei wan), which is about a 1,200 meter climb on a little more than 20 km. I'm glad to report that everybody made it to the top (and safely down), which is not bad given that many of us - including me - considered this trip quite a challenge.

As always the track log is on GPSies but you can also check out the map here:

Photo-wise, for now I only have a bunch of rather boring Panoramio photos but more will follow soon.

*Update (2009-11-09):* Thanks to everybody's picture sharing efforts I was able to put together a few nice group photos. Enjoy!

Before the start at the 內灣 (Neiwan) train station. This photo gives you a good impression of how steep it is. Some areas are easily more than 15%. The view at the top of the pass is really nice. All the hills make you want to climb more of them. :-)

If you liked these pictures there are a few more in my Bike trip to 宇老 album.

Caught in the act!

A rather particular kind of business seems to be one of the main sponsors of public transportation in Taiwan. At virtually every bus station in this country, be it in the city or out in nowhere, you can see this kind of advertisement:

Ad at a bus station for one of the many _(Click here for a larger version.)_

The names vary and are decorated with such tongue twisters as "International Commercial Affairs Detective". The ads often feature some attractive woman sporting a camcorder or some othern modern day Wannabe-Sherlock-Holmes equipment in a much too obvious and unprofessional fashion.

In the end these companies all have pretty much the same purpose. You hire them to spy on your loved one if you suspect him or her of being unfaithful. With adultery being one of the few legitimate reasons for divorce in Taiwan little afternoon outings in a cheap motel being interrupted by police, detectives, or spouses with camcorders are not uncommon.

The other day I was browsing to a hospital newsletter when when the following article - the picture to be exact - caught my eye:

The poor girl! Not only does she have a cheating bastard of a father, but on top of (or because of?) it all she now suffers from Tourette syndrome.

Bike trip to 顯伯公 (Xian bo gong)
October 30, 2009
Martin

In preparation for an upcoming bike trip to 宇老 (Yu lao) I went biking today and decided to go to 顯伯公 (Xian bo gong temple).

Because I didn't know the name of the place before I left (ha ha ...) I had a hard time finding the small entrance road, so I decided to take a bunch of photos on the way and add them to Panoramio, so that they will eventually show up in Google Earth. Taiwan's road signs leave lots of room for improvement - this is my small contribution.

I had been told it was pretty steep, so when the road stayed fairly flat I was doubting my navigation skills for a while. But I was not to be disappointed. The road kept getting steeper and steeper forcing me to take a few breaks. Luckily the view is so good though (on a clear day you can see Taipei 101 from there!), that you forget your sore legs for a while:

View from a clearing near 顯伯公 (Xian bo gong temple). On a clear day you can even see Taipei 101 from here. (Unfortunately that was not the case when I visited.)

A fellow biker even went to the trouble to measure the slope at various points. I should have thought of that first. What better excuse for breaks than collecting photos and numbers for your blog? :-)

At the top of the hill is a tiny temple:

At the top of 顯伯公 (Xian bo gong temple)

This is what it looks like inside:

The map is below and if you're curious to see some more details about the trip you can check out the GPSies track I uploaded.

Butterflies and bees

Martin

Now that I'm slowly getting the hang of Lightroom I'm reducing the backlog on my travel photos slowly but steadily.

This little collection is still from my shameful "DSLR in auto mode" days, but then again travel preparations are hard enough without learning to use your new toys. Anyway, as part of my experiments I was chasing helpless butterflies and even more helpless flowers around the house and pushing the macro end of my kit lens. While some of the photos got surprisingly good let me apologize in advance for any oversaturation caused by auto mode. :-)

It also gives me a chance to try the latest feature of my blog software: inserting the content of an entire gallery album with a simple line of markup text. I'm still working on the layout part, but while I'm doing that you can enjoy these little photos.

154-On line Metronome
October 25, 2009
Coco

On Line MetronomeBuy Metronome for cell phone

October 17, 2009
Coco

151-Ethiopia restaurant - my first 非洲餐
October 13, 2009
Coco

Ethiopia Restaurant website

Although My blog is very important to me, but it's always the first thing to drop off when life gets too busy. Too bad it's kind of non-profit activity and I still can't easily convince people why blog is a good time to spend on. But I do like myself to carry on doing it and I hope there is always time for it. 。

Pork flu ahoy!
October 2, 2009

The paranoia around the swine flu - or pork flu, as I like to call it - takes on interesting shapes at times. In many companies and public spaces in Taiwan these shapes bear uncanny resemblences to fever thermometers and large bottles of alcohol everywhere.

Where I work a couple of weeks ago each employee received a fever thermometer and was requested to measure their temperature twice a day and take sick leave if the temperature surpasses 38.5 degrees. There's certainly nothing wrong with that, especially because, as timing would have it, I was given a free thermometer just when I was developing a fever (not from H1N1, sorry to disappoint). But the funny thing is the assumption that the average person will first discover a fever by looking at the display of a thermometer and not by feeling chilly and weak. The not so funny thing is the fact that the thermometer is made in China, which is not only boosting the wrong economy, but also doesn't exactly put my mind at ease.

At around the same time the bathrooms were equipped with bottles of alcohol and boxes of alcohol pads:

This in turn inspires people to odd behavior. Scene: Company bathroom, earlier this week, observed while I'm brushing my teeth. A guy comes in and starts washing his hands very carefully. When he's done he walks over to the urinal, does his thing, then washes his hands again, this time even more carefully, i.e. first with soap, then with alcohol. Finally, he drenches a paper towel in alcohol, uses it to open the door by clumsily grabbing the edge of the handle with it, and walks out.

It's truly interesting to observe how the pseudo-measures designed primarily to calm people down work hand in hand with the fear that is fueled by the media reports. If this doesn't stop the swine flu, what will?

When ex-presidents are cooking ...
September 22, 2009
Martin

The summer heat and the presumably missing air conditioning in Taiwanese prisons is taking a serious toll on the few remaining functioning brain cells of Chen Shui-Bian, Taiwan's ex-president.

Even after being sentenced to life in prison for a long list of crimes including embezzlement and laundering of millions of dollars he remains convinced of his innocence, notwithstanding friends and family members testifying against him.

With the help of his indefatigable supporters (who, I assume, now have nothing to laund... pardon, do) he has come up with another cunning plan to escape life behind bars: Sue Obama.

It's almost too good to be true. If this doesn't turn out to be yet another sloppily researched story cooked up by the Taiwanese media, then this is my favorite news of the year (right up there with Crocs in trouble).

For the fans of insanity, here are two of the original articles reporting the story:

Sherman Island

Went to that funny Sherman Island kite surfing spot this Monday afternoon. As the name suggests, you need to cross a bridge to get there, I didn't know this one yet! I already knew the Richmond, Golden Gate, Bay, Dumbarton and San Mateo bridges, never heard of the John A Nejedly bridge before!

Anyway, I've posted a few pictures of the spot:

Sherman Island Kitesurfing

I've also updated my map of kitesurfing spots! It's a pity I cannot mark the spots I've been while in Taiwan, Borocay & Bali. I guess this feature will become available as Google Maps progresses. Google is taking over the world!

More about Sherman Island: Pay the parking fee and go park in the second parking lot. You need to launch your kite close to the parking area then walk 300 feet on a trail to the delta. Once in the water you have 3 seconds to go upwind otherwise you will crash into the bushes! Water is very flat, except for the small waves caused by motor boats. There are a coupe of buoys you need to avoid, and also don't try jumping under the high voltage electric lines!!

This description may sound terrible so far but actually the spot is great: Flat water, ample space. For some reason the other kite surfers prefer staying close to the shore and high voltage lines (???), so you have the rest of the spot just for yourself! Refer to windguru.cz to know when the wind is going to pick up and add +5 to the numbers they give you. For instance, I went riding when the forecast showed 8 knots, but we definitely had much more than 10 knots (otherwise my kite wouldn't fly).

Labor Day

I realize I haven't posted anything on my blog for weeks (months?), partly because living in the US is more "conventional" than Taiwan, and partly because I now spend more time on Facebook than updating my blog. During the week I'm also spending a lot of time kitesurfing on 3rd Avenue, which is very exciting because I can practice during the week. It's not too far from the office: I need to cross the Dumbarton bridge, take the 101 North and exit @ San Mateo. Tomorrow (Monday) is Labor Day and I will go try another kitesurfing spot: Sherman Island. I'll take my camera in case there's some nice scenery! 3rd Av is not really nice, here are a few pictures:

dsc_7913.jpg

Here is the San Mateo bridge, just next to the kitesurfing spot:

dsc_7918.jpg

The goal of these pictures was actually to test the field of view of my new 20mm lens. I bought it to the office the other day and passed it around (there are lots of photo-amateurs in our department), here is a picture of myself in the office:

(I hope my mom notices the fruits on my desk: No doughnuts!)

I've started building a map of kitesurfing spots but I found a very powerful website, localkitespots.com, that is extremely complete and will become my new reference in the future.

150-Coffee shops in Palo Alto

Coco

It's like a beautiful woman difficult to approach 。 I am not a coffee shop kind person,

I like the coffee taste from Peets. Luckly, there is one very close. Maybe because of the dark roasted taste makes me feel that it must come from Europe。 In Fact, it founded in Berkeley CA by Alfred Peet in 1966...

Style is the most important~

It's nice to sit outside...but ...with the homeless old man under the tress.... 。

There is another reason for Coupa to be so popular. You can be in the different location with different style of environment as you like。

August 24, 2009
Martin

After this month's natural disaster brought a lot of chaos over Taiwan (and politicians seized the opportunity to make it worse - but I'll save that topic for another time) people all over the world are showing their support in many different ways. One of them is this call for encouraging videos that is asking people to post videos showing their support.

These days the Taipei 101 building is displaying a big illuminated "加油" (Jia you), which is the Taiwanese way of cheering someone on.

We thought this makes a great background for such a video, so without further ado our Youtube premiere:

Don't forget to submit your own video to show your support or donate a little something!

149-Wheeler Lake
August 11, 2009
Coco

Wheeler Lake 在highway 4 的Lake Apine area。

Back to Berkeley
August 8, 2009
Loic

July's been very busy. A lot of work, but also a lot of drama with my roommate. Turns out the guy had a psychological conditions that made him quite hard to live with. I stayed there for two months then moved out at the end of July. I tried finding another share in San Francisco but it turned out lots of people were looking. So in the end I decided to look for a 1 bedroom apartment in the Bay Area. It's the same price as a share in SF!

Anyhow, I am back to Berkeley! I first moved to Berkeley less than 3 years ago, when I started this blog (in French at that time!). I can't believe all the things I did over the last 3 years - my internship @ Logitech, my diploma, Taiwan, now the US again...  but this time as a permanent employee, no more $2000-cars!

I've received all my household goods from Taiwan last week but I still haven't cleaned up the flat - here is how it looks:

July 25, 2009
Coco

Community school of Music and Arts。

1979年Private Lesson Tuition $6/30mins; $9/45mins;$12/60mins。 2009年Private Lesson Tuition $38/30mins; $55/45mins;$74/60mins。

17 music studios, classrooms, a ceramics studio, 。 a digital arts lab, a teacher resource center, a recital hall, 。 the 200+ seat Tateuchi Hall for concerts, 。 and exhibition space in Mohr Gallery。

Eclipse
July 24, 2009
Martin

A few days ago we were able to see an eclipse over Taiwan. Photo enthusiast that I am I had to draw my camera and see whether I could capture this rare event.

With only marginal help from the clouds and a pair of sunglasses my trusted Casio Exilim EX-750 didn't let me down. I was able to take a few decent pictures as you can see:

Eclipse over Taiwan

Some full-sized pictures can be found in my Snapshot album.

I think this is a good occasion to dedicate a few words to my camera. In the last four years it has taken more than 10,000 photos or about 20 GB of image data. It survived the occasional drop and even came back from a salt water induced coma last year. Hats off to this amazing little piece of technology! :-)

147 - Farmer market
July 13, 2009
Coco

On Sunday I went to Ikea in Emeryville and then I was glad to serve as a tourguide for my roommate in Berkley - She's from San Diego and hadn't been to Berkley yet! Telegraph street, coffee on Euclid street, University avenue, the campus, the Campanile, and Treasure Island on the way back. One more proof that I'm ready to welcome people visiting me in the Bay Area! By the way, my first Taiwanese visitor is coming soon...

Road Trip
October 18, 2006
Raphael
October 6th was the last of my internship. I've been working for Logitech in Fremont (Bay Area) for 6 months. At least the internship ended like it started: under the rain :) Actually we had sun all the time in between. So no need to complain. This internship was very interesting for me since it was the first one. Plus  it was in a foreign country. Well I've already been to the USA a few times before but only on holidays on the East  coast. It was nice to see what the West coast looks like. Besides that I learned a lot of different stuffs: how the  work life is, how it is to work in a high-tech firm...
My co-workers were very nice, specially the other swiss guys with whom I
hung out with. It felt a bit like being home :)

On saturday I began my road trip with Loic (another intern). We left berkeley around 8:30am and arrived in Vegas around 5-6pm. We had to make a stop somewhere since the grand canyon is pretty far away. We partied in the studio 54 again. It was fun as usual.
On Sunday Adel joined us in Vegas. He was coming from San Diego. We then left for the Grand Canyon. We  went to a small town called Peach Springs where some rafting tours were organized on the colorado river. It was really great. We went through rapids in the morning and got all wet. In the afternoon it was all quiet so that we could take a few pictures. Then we did a small helicopter ride to get back to the bus to take us back to the hotel.
The night we left for the Grand Canyon National Park. We arrived pretty late and there were no rooms available in any hotel. We then decided to sleep in the cars. It was really cold. Only Loic had a sleeping bag, and we didn't have much warm cloths. Adel and I had to take a ride at 4am in the morning in order to heat up the car :)
We woke up around 7-8am and started to look for a room for the night. We found one in a hotel with sauna and jaccuzzi. Don't have to tell you that we took advantage of that at night, right after entering the Park and seeing the nice views of the Canyon.
Adel had to leave on thursday since he had his master's presentation to do on friday. So we decided to go a bit further south. Next stop was Flagstaff. There are many things to see: meteor's crater, ruins, volcano... It was pretty nice. On thursday Adel left our little road trip but Loic and I kept on moving.
Next stop was Monument Valley. It's in Utah. We visited that on Friday morning. The rocks have nice shapes. In the afternoon, we drove until
Bryce Canyon. We arrived Friday night. Unfortunately, on Saturday it was raining so we decided to wait for the next day to visit this canyon. We spent the day in Cedar City. The biggest city near the canyon. It's like 1-1:30 drive. There wasn't much to do since the weather was pretty bad so we ended up watching a movie. It was nice to relax a little bit too :)
Sunday the weather was better. In the morning we went horse riding through the Red Canyon. There was some fog but it went away later in the morning. In the afternoon we went hiking through the Bryce Canyon. It's really worth seeing it: better than the Grand Canyon. We also had some snow in the top of the canyon since it rises till a bit more than 9100 feet.
Late afternoon, we left for Zion Canyon. It's also very nice since you can walk near the Virgin River which goes through the Canyon.
It gives another view over the canyon.
After that we started our journey back to Berkeley. We made a stop in the usual city: Las Vegas. We took a room in the
Luxor hotel (the one which is like a pyramid). It costed $100 since we went there during the week. That's why it was pretty cheap. We also did the rollercoaster on New York New York and went to see a show which wasn't very good but it was the only one with seats left.

I really enjoyed this road trip with my friends. We had a great time and very pretty views of the canyons. It's better to take a look
at the pics than explaining those breathtaking views of the different canyons. We did around 3000 miles (more or less 5000km) in
10 days. After this great road trip, I now have to prepare to go back to Switzerland early next week. I'll miss the bay area and all the people I met here.

Hello, I haven't posted anything for some time now. But it doesn't mean I'm not doing anything :)

This weekend two friends (Adel and Cedric (whom I hadn't see for almost 6 months!)) who are doing an internship in San Diego came to visit me. I've been preparing a little bit their arrival in the Bay Area. Adel arrived on Thursday so I just showed him a little bit what's happening in Berkeley at night. We went to a couple of bars to finally end up in Kip's. We danced and drunk a little bit. We met Loic there and stayed until the bar closed. This means around 1:30-2am...
On Friday, I had to work so Adel was on his own to visit the campus and the marina. Later in the afternoon I picked up Cedric at the airport. We ate something and then we went with Loic to the city to party. We went to a club which was pretty empty. They had to close one  dancefloor... But we had fun anyway!
On Saturday, we visited one of the world's most known prison : Alcatraz. It was interesting to see it and knowing people like Al Capone were there. Then we visited Little Italy and a bit of the Financial District. Saturday night we went to the city (San Francisco) to party. I wanted to try a new club but there was a private party so we got disappointed when arriving in front of the club :) We took a cab to get to Broadway (a street with a lot of clubs) and ended up in a tiny club which wasn't that good.
On Sunday, we went another time to visit San Fran. We took the known cable car and then headed to see the crookedest street
in San Francisco : Lombard Street. Tourist do it by car but we did it by foot :) Then we ate in Chinatown. Cedric has been waiting for this moment for a long time :)
On Monday, we went to the top of the Twin Peaks to enjoy a nice view of San Francisco. After that we went to take a walk in the Haight-Ashbury and the huge Golden Gate Park. We finished our tour by seeing the Golden Gate.

I had a great time showing SF to my friends and I hope they had fun too !

Wedding

Hi !
On Saturday July 29, I went to the wedding of a co-worker, Patrick Miauton. The wedding took place in a winery, Byington Winery. It is located not too far from San Jose.
We arrived there around 3pm to start organizing the wedding : set up the cameras, microphones, music, speakers...
Then we witnessed the union of Patrick, who is swiss, and Karen, who is from Taiwan. They got married by another co-worker who got a license to be able to officially marry the couple. The wedding was very nice and it was fun to see a friend marry Patrick and Karen. I mostly talked to Karen's family since there were more young people. She has a very nice family. A the end of the dinner, we played a game. Some questions were asked and we had to say wether it corresponded to the bride or the groom. At our table was sitting the bride's sister so we didn't do bad at all :)
After the wedding, we went to a club in San Jose called Tasty. It was full so those of us who arrived late weren't able to get in ! It wasn't the best place to celebrate a wedding. It wasn't really the newly weds type of place since it was mostly hip-hop. But when you're with friends, you can always have fun :)

I wish them all the best in their new life together !

Camping in Big Sur
July 10, 2006
Raphael
This week end, Sharon, one of my housemate organized a camping week end. The idea was to get to a camping site in Big Sur on Friday and leave on Sunday. Sharon and some of her friends left on Friday morning to reserve the place. First arrived, first served.
I left Berkeley with Loic, Thomas ( a housemate) and Matthias (Thomas' friend). We left around 8pm because I couldn't get out of work earlier and then we had to buy food for the whole week end. Sharon gave us some instructions on how to get there but the instructions weren't very clear. We drove till Big Sur, around 160 miles, but didn't find the camping site. So we kept driving a little bit till we reached Lucia. We thought there was going to be some people to ask directions to. But there was only a closed restaurant and store... Since we were in Lucia and we already passed Big Sur we thought we missed the panels. So we headed back to Big Sur and stopped in front of a hotel. We went towards a place where there was light and it ended up being just a little room. After some inspections we found a map. We analyze it and find out the camping spot was just a few miles after Lucia...
Then we had another problem, I was running out of gas... Thankfully, the map also pointed out gas stations. We decided to head to the closest station. Which was in the opposite direction of the camping site. When arriving there we noticed we couldn't pay with credit card at the pump. The station was closed so we had to wait for the gas station to open. The gas station was open from 7:59am till 8:01pm.
Thus, we decided to find a place to sleep somewhere, preferably a beach. We found the Pfeiffer Beach a few miles further. Thomas and his friend slept on the beach and Loic and I in the car. I couldn't sleep on the beach, I had no sleeping bag. I was supposed to get it on the camping site... The night was pretty cold so I slept with several cloths on ;)
We woke up around 9:30, ate a breakfast, put gas in the car and headed towards the camping site. We arrived there around 11:30am while we were supposed to be there by 11pm... We did some hiking, but it was really hot so we didn't do the whole trail. Then to cool down, we decided to go to the beach. Once we got there, the fog was all over the place and it was very cold. Sharon started to hesitate if she wanted to stay
another night. She was already cold the night before and on saturday night it was obviously going to be colder (because of the fog). Plus she was a little bit sick.. We made a little vote and finally decided to leave after having a barbeque. I did most of the driving at night. Actually, we noticed that most of the cars coming in the other directions didn't take off their high beams when crossing another car. They even had high beams while following another car... This is crazy and so annoying !
We only did one night of camping but it was fun. And this way I got to see the World Cup final on Sunday :)

Week end in San Diego
July 6, 2006

Monday and Tuesday were days off so I went to san diego with another intern from my company, Loic. We stayed at a friend's place, Adel. He lives in La Jolla, a rich neighbourhood of San Diego. Our plane landed a little before 10pm. We flew with United Airlines and the crew was pretty funny. Well, Loic and I were the only ones laughing on the plane :) As soon as we got on the plane, the person said something like "Welcome to the flight going to LA. No just kidding, just doing that to see who's following." We had to take a smaller plane than expected so he's like "Don't worry, the plane didn't shrink, we just changed planes."

Adel came to pick us up at the airport and we directly hit the club. We went to the club "BroadwaY". It's an old
bank converted in a club. It has several rooms with different kinds of music : hip-hop, techno...
On saturday, we went to visit the USS Midway. It's an aircraft carrier that was used in the World War 2 and also Desert Storm. It takes a couple of hours to visit but it's interesting.
Then we decided to party in Tijuana, Mexico. We took the trolley to the border and then took a bus to Tijuana. It costs $3 and the mexican border didn't even looked in the bus. We ate dinner in a restaurant over there but it wasn't good and not even enough to eat. I guess we went to the worst restaurant in Tijuana :)
We went to a club called Safari and by paying the entry you can also go to another club called the mystery club. All drinks were free, just had to pay for the tip. One of the clubs was almost empty and the other one was a hip-hop club.
It was nice and we were almost the only white people in there. Reminded me of the Loft back home. It was interesting when the DJ yelled something like "Throw yo hood up!". Everyone put their hands up and represented a letter or something for their hoods.
We left the club at around 5am and arrived at Adel's place between 8-9am. We didn't really know how to get to La Jolla with public transportations and Loic got stocked at the american border for some time because he was missing a stamp somewhere. He finally got through but never got the missing stamp...
When we arrived at Adel's place we immediately hit the beach. Finally beaches where you can swim, not like in San Francisco where it's too cold :)
On Monday Adel had to work so Loic and I headed to the well known Zoo. It took us around 3h to get there by public transportations since people in the street were giving us wrong information on the buses... The zoo was nice, it is very big. There we met two of my housemates who had the same plan as us for the week end :)

We had a great time in San Diego and I liked the city. Thanks Adel for organizing this great week-end!

Gay Pride 2006

This week-end the well known gay pride took place. Since I live near San Francisco, I couldn't miss the parade. Thus, when I was told, that the parade was happening this week end, I had to cancel my plans to go to Lake Tahoe.
On saturday, we didn't know what to do. Some of my roomies and I decided to go to Castro. Castro is the gay neighbourhood of San Francisco (for those who don't know). We went there just to see what it looked like. There were a lot of people of course, some music and alcohol. It was interesting to go to this part of San Francisco since I had never been there. We didn't stay long since we already arrived pretty late.
The real thing was on sunday. The parade started at 10h30 am. We saw the parade until 12h30 pm. Just getting out of the Bart station (the train here), you already saw some persons with panels saying that gays should repent, that they were sinners... Hopefully there weren't many and noone was really paying attention to them. The parade in itself was pretty nice. Many different gay groups like the police, the cheerleaders, etc... Some had some music which was cool. After 2h of standing and watching the parade, we got hungry so we went eating. Then we went to the Civic Center, were there was a little concert and some food to buy. There were persons wearing excentric cloths, guys dressed as girls. There were even guys walking naked in the streets and a couple of girls walking topless. Famous people were in the parade too like San Francisco's mayor and Jennifer Beals who acts in the TV serie called the "L Word". It was kinda fun even though I didn't really fitted in since I am straight. But it's worth it to see the parade at least once.

I've been living in Berkeley for a few weeks so I think it's about time I put some pictures of this city. Well for now I have some of the University since Berkeley is mostly known for it. I find it great since it is really bigger than my university in Switzerland (EPFL) and the buildings are nicer. It also has a lot of grass where you can sit and enjoy a nice Californian weather. UC Berkeley, also called Cal (by the waz I need to get cloths from Cal in order to be more local...), is represented by a bear.

On saturday I went to the beach with one of my housemates and her friend that is here for a few days. We went to Stinson beach for the afternoon. It's supposed to be one of the best beaches in the area. It's actually very nice and it felt good to finally go to a real beach. The last one I went to we had to hike to get there so there was noone there :)
Stinson Beach was full of people laying on the beach and doing the usual stuff. The only problem is that almost noon was going in the water. The water is so cold... But we don't go to the beach without swimming :) So we just went in and out so that we can say we did that. Most of the people in the water were surfers wearing stuff to protect them from the cold water. So it wasn't very encouraging :)

On sunday I met a cousin that lives in San Rafael. Actually, she's a cousin of the 3rd degree so not really close family. Even my parents have never seen her family. Since I don't live far from her place, it was nice seeing her. She lived in the area for a long time so she can show me around.
We decided to go to Napa Valley (with her daughter and her parents). This is the wine country, California is known for wines. We went to two different wineries and did some wine testing. The first one was an italian winery and a winery with lavender. Wines were pretty good even if I don't drink much wine. I even bought a bottle of wine in one of the wineries. I had a nice day visiting and getting to know a part of the family that I had never seen.

Life in the US

As most of you know, I've been living in California for over 2 months now. I arrived on March 29th and I immediately had to look for a place to live. Everything needed can be found on this website www.craigslist.com
I decided to find a room in Fremont, this means close to work. My housemate was a 30 year-old Indonesian. He was pretty nice but I got bored in Fremont. I tried going out and we ended up in a bar with cowboys singing karaoke. It was so ridiculous that it was funny...
I stayed in Fremont the time to settle down, find a car, open bank account....
Then I started looking for a new room in a city that has more nightlife. I chose Berkeley since it is close to San Francisco and there are a couple of bars. Actually, these are pretty empty since there are not many students here around summer. But it's still better than Fremont.
I found a room in a house full of young people in Berkeley. I've been living there for 2 weeks now. We are actually 10 persons in the house : 6 guys and 4 girls. It's nice since there are many different nationalities (american, french, german...), everyone is very friendly and do some trips together. The first week-end I stayed here, we went to see a park called Point Reyes north of San Francisco. It has a famous lighthouse and a few beaches but the water is too cold to swim :)
Since you almost can't live in the States without a car I had to buy my first car. It's a 1990 Acura Integra. Pretty old but still runs great. I bought it $2500. I must drive it pretty carefully since I'm selling it back when I'll leave California.
I get to drive it pretty often since I must drive from Berkeley to Fremont to work. That's 30 miles so almost 50 km one way. I have a co-worker also living in Berkeley so we carpool. This means we can use a special lane on the freeway to avoid traffic jams. It's around a 30 minute drive so it's not that far, at least for standards in the bay area :)
Las Vegas
May 31, 2006
Raphael
Hey, welcome to my blog! A little about me. I'm a 22 years-old swiss student. I'm currently doing an internship for Logitech near San Francisco (Fremont) for 6 months. I've already been here for 2 months.

On monday May 29th, it was Memorial Day. A week end of 3 days! We had to do something fun so I organized a trip to Las Vegas. Unfortunately not everyone was able to come but it was a nice week-end.
I left from the bay area with another intern (Loic) and started our 10 hour drive to vegas on friday. Vegas is at almost 600 miles from where we live. We made a stop half way in Bakersfield. In vegas we met my good friend Adel. We didn't gamble too much since we prefered spending our money on buffet (really good one in the Bellagio), parties (MGM club on saturday and the Rain club on sunday).
On saturday, we wanted to go to the Hard Rock Cafe club. They weren't letting anyone in except persons on the list. Adel tried to manage our entry with the boss but since we were 3 guys and no girls he refused. Then we realized, persons on the line getting in, were giving money to the boss. That's when we decided to leave and go to the MGM where we had a lot of fun. There were girls dancing in thongs but also a little something for the ladies :)
Adel was really the man of the week end since he won a little while gambling and all the girls were crazy for him. While being in the MGM club for 5 minutes, a girl was already hitting on him. The day after we were in the line to get in the other club and another girl asks him to take a picture with him. When we got in theclub there were a couple of guys breakdancing. It was pretty good but after a while security came in and stopped the show.
Loic and I didn't have that much success but still got the oportunity to dance with girls (the girls that Adel was willing to leave us :)).

All this said, we had a great time and it was totally worth it to drive 10h each way to spend 2 nights in Vegas.
The pics i didn't want to spend time classifying them so it might not be very good. And I just received the camera so some pics may not be that good. Plus i didn't take all the pictures :)

Richard Newcomb
I recently purchased a Shure SM-57 instrument microphone, with which I have been recording of late. I have found that for instrumentals, this microphone does an exceptional job. However, when I record vocals, I need to set the recording levels to a much higher sensitivity in order to capture the necessary volume. This may be an [...]
Microphones – Part Three
December 31, 1969
Richard Newcomb
I decided after performing in the open air that it would be advisable to make one small change in the microphone I use for announcing the tunes, vocalizing and introducing the band. To wit, I wanted one I could actually turn on and off so that it would not be constantly live. To this end, [...]

Richard Newcomb
I have been considering upgrading my microphones for some time. Most of my previous recordings were done with a Chinese-made recording microphones, bereft of any identifying marks save a large ‘GA’ on one side. This microphone is not bad, but it does not produce optimal sounds, especially for my vocals, so I have been looking [...]

I updated my Maps page to include some trails I’ve mapped on a site called Gmaps Pedometer. This site lets to map a route, calculating distance and calories. It even takes elevation into account! This is pretty handy for tracking my calories burned which I started doing on SparkPeople a few weeks ago. I also [...]

Marcello Fernandez
This week, I was having a very interesting conversation with my brother about Bolivia, companies and the world economic crisis. We were specially talking about international companies that are particularly touched by this bad season. My brother taught me how these things happen with a very nice analogy that I would like to share. However, my [...]
Bolivia and the new Consumer Price Index (CPI)
December 31, 1969
Marcello Fernandez
This article is meant to be just a common sense analysis about the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) 2007 that has been applied in Bolivia since April 2008. This subject would not be that important if there weren’t critical changes in the way that this index is calculated (source: Cainco Analysis ). Here are just some [...]

Marcello Fernandez
Today, 28th October 2008, there are so many changes in the world that who can really predict the Future. Once again nature, the market’s nature, has shown us that human beings are just so fragile and weak against the complexity of markets and the imprevisibility of our world. I would like to write just some ideas [...]

In December 2008, Evo Morales, president of Bolivia, banished the importation of cars that are more than 5 years old. This measure was quite a surprise for everybody, including the car dealers that were importing old Japanese model cars. The official reasons for this measure is to reduce the amount of cars, the levels of pollution, [...]

A New Computer

Richard Newcomb
As I mentioned in a previous post, my reliable old Apple Macintosh PowerBook G4 passed away some weeks ago. As this was the central piece of my recording studio, I have been unable to do any recording since this tragic event occurred. I have been considering changing my equipment to include a multi-track recorder, thus [...]
