172 - My Favorite Burrito
August 29, 2010
Coco

What do you like to have after go back to US?。
But, go back to US... I don't know 。
Burrito", It took me 3 years to figure it out why.

I am so happy that I tried。

To build one big door or 2 small doors..?。 也或許他們想表達就是簡單的一進一出吧, 就差put "IN" and "OUT" on them。

The more authntic the food is the more difficult the menu to read。 Super Burrito / Regular Burrito / Taco。

CSPI(Center for Science in the public interest)的數據。 Chipotle's Chicken Burrito / 1,000 calories and 12 grams of saturated fat。 Chipotle's Vegetarian Burrito / 1,120 calories / saturated fat (14 grams)。 hipotle's Barbacoa Burrito / 1,300 calories / saturated fat (14 grams)。 1 Burrito= 1/4 pounder fries + large Coke。 One Regular burrito for 2 people了吧。 。 1) Main - Spanish rice, beans , meat, 。 2) Cheese :white Mexican cheese, 。 3) Vegetable : tomato, cilantro, onions, roasted peppers, and rarely lettuce, avocado, 4) salsa : Pico de gallo, red tomato, green tomatillo, rost corn, guacamole。 5) Sauce : fresh sour cream, 。

3 cups unsifted flour。 1/4 teaspoon salt。 1/4 teaspoon baking powder。 1/3 cup lard(豬油)。 1 cup water。

Address : 2058 Old Middlefield Way, Mountain View, CA 94043-2402 。 Call : (650) 965-2755

(Zhong zheng shan)
August 19, 2010
Martin

I love to use Google Earth to find the destination of my next hiking or biking trip. It's not that there are not enough places to go without having to resort to the Internet, but quickly jumping there to see whether the view is good and what the road or path looks like can filter out the disappointing ones and save the precious weekends. :-)

A few weeks ago I was trying to find a good spot that had a view of Taipei but was still easily reachable by public transportation. (Yang Ming Shan National Park) has plenty of nice hills and mountains but most of them are poorly connected to bus or metro.

One of the closer ones immediately stood out: 中正山 (Zhong zheng shan). It promised to have a good view of the whole city, all the way down to Taipei 101:

So, we did a little research, found how to go there and off we went, armed with my trusted GPS logger, the camera, and way too little water.

Just so you get an idea where our hike took us, here's the bird's eye view:

The yellow arrow is 中正山 (Zhong zheng shan), our main destination. The red one is 大屯西峰 (Da tun shan west peak), the place we figured we could go if we had enough energy left (which we did).

The green arrow is hovering over 七星山 (Qi xing shan), the highest mountain in Taipei. And, finally, the blue arrow is pointing at 大屯山 (Da tun shan), which is said to have one of the nicest sunsets in Northern Taiwan, something we had been able to confirm on a previous trip.

There you go, so much for the maps. Lean back and enjoy the photos. (But don't lean back too far, otherwise you won't be able to reach your mouse. ;-)

The entrance to the entrance to the 中正山親山步道 (Zhong zheng shan hiking trail). The real entrance comes a little later, this is a sort of pre-hiking trail that saves you from taking the car or scooter because it's easily reachable with public transportation from the 新北投 (Xin bei tou) MRT station. A map of the entire hiking trail and its closer surroundings. ([local:/gallery/data/zhong-zheng-shan/images/original/20100801-112618_MR3231_D90.jpg Click here for a bigger version].) Another reference photo, but a useful one ... This map shows the distances between the points, not only to 中正山 (Zhong zheng shan), but also to other mountains such as [local:/gallery/albums/da-tuen-shan 大屯山 (Da tun shan)].
([local:/gallery/data/zhong-zheng-shan/images/original/20100801-112703_MR3232_D90.jpg Click here for a bigger version].) The initial section of the hiking trail is rather flat with the occasional flight of stairs (and mosquito). Now, this is the real entrance to the 中正山親山步道 (Zhong zheng shan hiking trail) on 登山路 (Deng shan road). Luckily, as it should be for any decent hiking trail entrance, it is fully equipped with a convenience store. :-) The second part of the trail is pretty steep and mostly stairs. It really takes it out of you on a hot day, especially since the forest somehow doesn't make the air feel cooler. In this hut people used to burn timber to produce coal. Taking a rest in the shade. One of the many interesting butterflies in the area. The beautiful panoramic view from the top of 中正山 (Zhong zheng shan). At the far right you can recognize 淡水 (Dan shui) and the mountain on the left is [local:/gallery/albums/guan-yin-shan 觀音山 (Guan yin shan)].

August 16, 2010
Coco

The more cheerful the colors, the better.

FREITAG On Line Store

170 - Sushi TOMI
August 6, 2010
Coco

Asahi beer hall

一些大型魚類如Tuna(especially Bluefin)比較有可能有較高含量的汞(Mercury)。 因為鮪魚在魚類生物中on the top of Food chain, 所以也可能是汞含量的冠軍。

左邊那 Hamachi Nigiri(握壽司), 一片 2.5USD(82.5NTD)。

Dragon roll。 deep fried tempura-shrimp in the middle, topped with 鰻魚和 酪梨。

Sleeping Lotus and sleepy photographers
August 3, 2010
Martin

And we continue our photo blog with a post that's much easier on the eyes than the ugliness of touristy Paris! Today's topic: Lotus flowers.

Last Saturday a friend invited me to join him and his mentor to take photos at a Lotus pond near 北埔 (Bei pu). I learned a thing or two about photography, but what I realized the most was that there are at least two very different types of photographers.

** The first kind likes to get up early, say 4-6 in the morning, occupy a well-chosen spot, and patiently wait for the sun to rise to shoot the perfect photograph - a true work of art.
** The second one doesn't like to change his sleeping habits because of his camera. He likes to drag it along, though, whenever he goes some place nice and then tries to shoot a great photo given the current angle and lighting conditions.

Have you guessed which type I am? Yes, big surprise, I don't like to get up early. :-) Either way, it's very interesting to observe the differences in both behavior and outcome.

My friend is of the first kind. He'll adjust his tripod for minutes, just to get the exact angle he has in mind. I, on the other hand, will rather look for a new subject than fidget with my tripod to make it stand in the muddy slope. Cause, you know, you have to clean it later and get your hands dirty ...

Obviously, the outcome is also very different. His photo collection is full with photos that you could hang on a wall and that will make people go "oooh" and "aaah".

My photos are much simpler. Still nice, I believe, but much simpler. My only real goal when I take photos is to capture the moment and make the photo look as impressive as what I perceive. I want my photos to tell a story and give people an impression of what the place and the atmosphere was like.

Do I wish I could take some more "artistic" photos once in a while? Of course, but I don't think I'm patient enough to focus on that. I'll just be learning it slowly - after all I have plenty of time. If BP keeps their wells shut nature will be around long enough for me to learn how to ban it on (virtual) film.

So, the photos below may not exactly reach my declared goal since it wasn't an actual trip. See it as the result of my exercise for there be more beautiful trip photos in the future! :-)

A pink Lotus flower (紅蓮). A duck was patiently waiting for me to clumsily set up my camera. It must have been used to being The dried seed cup of a Lotus flower. The flower of a Hibiscus (朱槿 or 扶桑花) tree. I have no idea what this plant is called but it certainly looks interesting. To the untrained eye these look a little like Daisies but to a professional like me they look like ... uh ... Taiwanese Daisies? ;-) The more beautiful flowers I photograph, the more I think that serious flower photographers should have a botany degree, just to be able to name their pictures. A wet Lotus petal floating on the water. I caught my friend setting up this stereotype scene but couldn't help taking a shot. :-) A [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Shower_Tree Golden Shower tree] ([http://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/阿勃勒 阿勃勒]). Paris through my eyes
July 26, 2010
Martin

Every so often I remember that I forgot to post a bunch of photos on my website only to forget it again two minutes later. This is _not_ one of those times. This time I actually posted them.

On our three-day Paris trip last year I got a little bored of stereotype Paris. It's really just like you know it from TV with one big exception; the tourists and their side effects are mostly missing in TV Paris. Real Paris, however, is teeming with tourists, street vendors and other ripper-offers - pretty much everything that takes the fun out of traveling.

Armed with my new toy I started observing the people instead and the little things that no one normally pays attention to. Suddenly the city became much more entertaining!

I give you Paris through Martin's eyes ...

Sometimes you have to wonder how certain things get to certain places ... We were not sure if she's the tourist guide or a tourist but people in Paris sure seem to try to rise over the crowd a lot. Another case of striving for the top. No customers? Maybe it's the exorbitant price of 2.50€ for a tiny ball of ice cream! Leaving made easy: Cool design at the top of the Arc de Triomphe This Japanese couple was taking their own wedding photos. Equipped with a camera and a tripod they were touring the city and taking pictures of themselves in front of famous places. Actually a very good idea, but I probably wouldn't wear [http://ihatecrocs.com/ Crocs], so I wouldn't have to cut off the feet for all photos. One of the countless street vendors selling crap to tourists. In this case tacky little Eiffel towers. Next stop: Rome

169 - San Luis Obispo
July 23, 2010
Coco

La Fin du Monde 是法語, 意思是The end of word, 他是Belgian style的一種啤酒。 而且他也在瓶中進行發酵(fermented in the bottle)。

Lamb with pita bread,

。 Big sky cafe

San Luis Obispo

Chocolate goodness
July 21, 2010
Martin

Last weekend a combination of a friend's request for chocolate cake and the desire to take on fresh baking challenges recently led us to try one of my family's favorite recipes.

I wasn't exactly optimistic about the outcome given that it involves a few steps that my traditional mix-it-all-and-bake cakes don't require. There's separating eggs (who likes to touch eggs?!), melting chocolate in a water bath, glaze-proofing the cake with warm jam, and finally pouring a cup of thick chocolate glazing on top of it, hoping that it covers the cake's surface equally.

Well, despite a few mishaps such as yolk in the egg whites, burn marks on my arms, an overzealous oven, and poor garnishing timing (and, apparently, lack of talent) it turned out quite delicious!

And just to show you how delicious it is, let's take a look at what's inside ...

You've got to love the chocolate part. :-)

168-Pismo beach
July 19, 2010
Coco

Cracked Crab"。 Cracked Crab was founded in Pismo Beach,  in 1999 by Mike and Kathy Lee。

Cracked crab menu

Alaskan Bairdi Crab $3, Alaskan Red King Crab $10, Whole Live Dungeness Crab $9。 Dungeness Crab, Opilio (Snow) Crab, Jonah Crab,  Claws Domestic, Gulf Shrimp 。 Louisiana Crawdads, Clams, Whole Local Rock Crab, Mussels Slipper, Lobster $5。

一大堆吃螃蟹的器具 for picking and cracking.

Sea Venture 360 degree view

What a life, Out door SPA, Local beer and moon light...

167-Hearst castle
July 19, 2010
Coco

Maybe the definition of "a little something " from rich people is different from us normal people 。

。 I don't really like the style in this castle, It's a little of something everywhere, messy, no topic, outside new and inside old。 During the tour, I just want to ask why is this thing here? 。 All the styles are not related and even don't go with each other。 I read a lot of good reviews about this castle but I just can't make myself agree with them。

Experience Tour : 。

Maybe I don't really into old stuff too much or maybe this castle is really not that special。 1 hour and 45 minutes tour seemed forever to me. no freedom to look around, need to listen to tour guy's boring speech, those stupid questions people asked even make it worse。 Who need 1hour and 45 minutes to check 2 swimming pools and few rooms out? 。 1 tour should be able to cover whole castle and in 45 minutes. no need to separate into 4 tours.

I have never been to any castle or museum running this way, the management makes a very bad tour experience to me, I am sure to having a tour guy in the front and another in the back watching people is not the only way to protect the castle. Maybe they don't know there are high tech can be used and everyone else is using them......

我還是覺得這個地點不是那麼好, kind of middle of no where 。

166-Portola state park trial
July 7, 2010
Coco

。 Portola State Park 跟Big Basin State Park 一樣是一個紅木林。 座落於San Mateo County County的Peters Creek and Pescadero Creek。
。 Portola Redwood state park 有長約18 miles的步道。 Portola Redwoods State Park trial information

July 6, 2010
Coco

4. 炒山蘇小魚乾 (stir-fry asplenium nidus with little dry fish)。

7. 蒜泥牡蠣(garlic oyster with soy sauce )。

9. 蒜苗炒三層肉(stri-fry garlic sprout with pork bell)。

14. 三杯大捲(three cup squid)。

Google
July 4, 2010
Coco

doodle   /ˈduːdl/ DJ    /'dudḷ/ KK
to draw lines, shapes, especially when you are bored or thinking about something else(尤指厭煩或心不在焉時)亂塗,胡寫亂畫 verb V。 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------。

163-I Wanna Be Loved By You
June 30, 2010
Coco

I wish I have a way to tell you how much I like this little clip from the movie "Three little words"。

Although I didn't look like ancient people, but I couldn't resist those old moves from the past。 Maybe because I wasn't able to participate on time, or just because of recent moves suck too much。

Lived in Palo Alto almost a year. I should have blog about this lovely theater long time a ago。 I don't remember how many movies I have seen there with friends and by myself。 I finally google about it today, The Theather was originally opened in June 9, 1925。 It's a Greek-Assyrian style architecture, Designed by architects Weeks and Day, 。 The theater  generally screens films made between the 1920s and 1960s.

。 It's easy to see this kind of old theaters in the US. but definitly not many of them still play old moves like Stanford Theater。 Last weekend, I went to San Lius opispo, there is a beautiful old theater called "Fremont Theater"。 I was hopping it still play those beautiful classic movies, just likethe way it looks , but I was disappointed.

You can hear organ played during the intermissions before and after the 7:30 show. 。 I like the most is the piano and pianoest will slowly go down and up when movie start and finish 。 The ticket is 7 USD for adult, but tonight is free , A treat from ticket seller

(Feng qi luo ri hiking trail)
June 27, 2010
Martin

This weekend we once again found ourselves with no particular plan and surprisingly good weather - the forecast had predicted rain for two days -, so we tried to find a short hiking trail in the same area as our dinner and shopping plans.

We quickly found something on what by now is one of our favorite hiking blogs. The family who writes it has been to so many places in Hsinchu County that you can always find a good suggestion or directions to a hard-to-find trail.

So, we settled for a rather short but nice little hiking trail near 新豐 (Xin feng), just north of 竹北 (Zhu bei), called 鳳崎落日登山步道 (Feng qi luo ri hiking trail). It's only about 3.3 kilometers one way but that coincided well with our habit of getting up (too) late.

The GPSies map ...

... and our photos. Have fun!

The entrance to the 鳳崎落日登山步道 (Feng qi luo ri mountain hiking trail). Given that the highest point of the trail is at about 135 meters above sea level the Near the entrance there's an old [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M48_Patton#M48A3 M48A3 Patton] gun tank of the type that was used in the Vietnam war. It's not entirely obvious why it is where it is but it's still interesting. (Feng qi luo ri hiking trail) has recently been (re?)built, so it's very nice to walk. Almost a little too easy ... When the forest lightens up not only can you see Hsinchu's coast and the beautiful ocean ... ... but also a life-sized Tyrannosaurus from the [http://www.ding-dong.com.tw/ 小叮噹科學遊樂區 (Little Ding-dong Science Park)], a small theme park right next to it. Apart from a theme park the trail passes an army tank exercise area and what looks like the remains of a landfill where some people are still treasure hunting. The trail eventually leads to ... ... a little recreational area for children of all ages to play. Army bunkers can be seen all along the way ... ... as well as caterpillars and other animals.

Chocolate and pizza and chocolate
June 27, 2010
Martin

As with so many foreign foods finding good pizza in Taiwan isn't easy, just like it isn't easy to find good Asian food in, say, Switzerland. (If you live in Switzerland and are thinking that your local Chinese restaurant isn't that bad, chances are it doesn't qualify as good _real_ Chinese food. :-)

Fortunately there are always (plenty of) exceptions to the rule, and _Bon Appétit_ in 竹北 (Zhu bei, Jubei, Chubei, insert your favorite spelling here) is one of them. Here's what their pizza looks like:

Pizza Vegetarina:

Pizza Giardinera:

And yes, they are as good as they look!

Of course, pizza makes hungry for dessert, and what better after pizza than chocolate? So, we went on a little shopping spree in Carrefour and bought as much stuff as we could possibly fit on the scooter. A selection of our items:

The 1.6 kg of chocolate don't quite compare with our visit of the Lindt factory store in Switzerland last summer, which looked something like this:

If you're wondering where all these calories go stay tuned for the next blog post about one of our favorite weekend activities: hiking.

Jia li shan (加里山)
June 27, 2010
Martin

Instead of racing a dragon boat or eating rice dumplings we used the recent Dragon boat festival holiday for a hike to the nearby "training mountain", Jia li shan (加里山).

Dragon boat festival also marks the end of the rainy season. This year the sky was right on time and after a few days of relatively heavy rain we had a (mostly) dry day to enjoy our hike.

After seeing a few blog articles and Panoramio photos I had got the impression that it must be a fairly easy hike with maybe one or two short segments that involve pulling yourself up on a rope. Far from it! On the last quarter of the trail your hands are just as busy as your legs.

An elevation of 800 meters on about 4 km length makes it an interesting day hike. Below are the trail record on GPSies and the photos from my gallery. Enjoy!

Getting ready for 加里山 (Jia li shan) ... A mushroom The first obstacle on the way to 加里山 (Jia li shan) is a creek that has to be crossed. A few hundred meters before this creek we met a young couple who had just turned around because of the high water level. It had indeed rained for a few days before our hike but we didn't want to give up that easily. So, some of us simply took off their shoes ... ... while others jumped across a bunch of large stones making for an extra adrenaline kick. :-) After a bit of jumping, climbing, and wading everybody made it safely to the middle of the stream. From the middle the 佳里小橋 (Little Jia Li bridge) leads across the second half. We're not sure why the bridge's name carries the character 佳 instead of 加, but that's what the sign says, so we're sticking with it. :-) This morning the 佳里小橋 (Little Jia Li bridge) was slightly under water but we made it anyway with only minor amounts of water in our shoes. (Jia li shan mountain shelter), a little less than half-way to the peak, is a good place to take a quick rest. (Some less congenial people from other hiking groups also seem to think it's a good place to smoke, but the clean air of a hiking trail never is!) Some people have interesting ways of crossing obstacles. The last quarter of the hiking trail involves a lot of climbing on ropes and roots, which was a bit of a challenge given the wet floor, but nevertheless a lot of fun.

(Bi lai shan)
May 23, 2010
Martin

Another one of our emergency hikes lead us to 比來山 (Bi lai shan), a small mountain not to far from Hsinchu that had been recommended to us by someone we met on a previous hike.

Since many mountains don't have official hiking trails it can be a little tricky to find the trail entrance and you never know how many different trails there are. We had found a blog post that described a hike to said mountain and decided to try and approach it from the other side - unfortunately with little luck because our road of choice turned out to be a dead end.

Either way, the view was good and the hike was just right to take advantage of another rare sunny Saturday in the middle of the rain season.

This is what we thought (and had been told) is the road up to 比來山 (Bi lai shan). Quite nice to hike because of the shade and the slightly lower temperature than down in the valley. There are plenty of little lizards along the way. The forest ranges from dense vegetation and bamboo to well organized trees like these. :-) The odd shaped mountain is 五指山 (Five finger mountain), one of my favorite (masochistically speaking) bike destinations, but from this angle only three fingers are visible. Butterflies are also plentiful on 比來山 (Bi lai shan). Later on the road becomes more narrow with skin-cutting grass growing over the sides, so it's a good idea to wear long pants! Again the three fingers of 五指山 (Five finger mountain) in the back. And finally the disappointing dead-end just a few hundred meters below the peak. Well, nothing left to do but turning around and try a different route next time! A dragon fly along the way. Nothing quite like sitting at a river on a hot summer day, so to cool down from our little hike we stopped by the 頭前溪 (Tou qian river).

May 16, 2010
Shou #1

A frog goes hiking: 合歡山 (He huan shan) - Day 2
May 4, 2010
Martin

I'm sure viewers of the first part have been anticipating the rest of the photos from last month's trip to 合歡山 (He huan shan).

Sunday first took us to 合歡山東峰 (He huan shan east peak). And the two of us who still had enough energy bagged the - admittedly easy - trophies of 石門山 (Shi men shan) and 合歡尖山 (He huan jian shan) as well. The latter two are really just better hills but the wind sure made it fun. It brought back memories of our typhoon weekend in 墾丁 (Kenting) over two years ago. It was hard to stand at times.

Unfortunately the wind also brought a lot of fog with it, so if you're looking for more great views you'll have to come back in a few weeks or so. :-)

Nothing like a little ham and irony to start a new day ... (He huan shan east peak) is full with gorgeous 杜鵑 (Rhododendron) bushes. The hiking trail up to 合歡山東峰 (He huan shan east peak). In good conditions - weather and legs - a return trip might only take about an hour. After a short hike we were at the top of 合歡山東峰 (He huan shan east peak), the 33rd highest mountain in Taiwan with 3421 m altitude. Joe at the top of foggy 合歡山東峰 (He huan shan east peak). (He huan shan east peak) actually has two little peaks right next to each other and it's hard to tell which one is higher. The one in the back counts as the real peak with 3421 m altitude and the sign on the one in front carries the number Luckily there's a sign in all four directions that shows the view on a sunny day. Otherwise it would have been pretty hard to tell that the scenery is nice. :-) It's hard to describe how a little bit of hot soup or tea makes you feel better when you're sitting in the wind at the top of a foggy mountain. But trust me, it does! One of the many 杜鵑 (Rhododendron) bushes in the 合歡山 (He huan shan) area. 杜鵑 (Rhododendron)

Tiramisu and the masters of the blue tiger
April 26, 2010
Martin

Butchering European culture has developed into an innocent tradition here in Taiwan. Most noticeably this has to do with food, one of my "favorites" (to tell, not to eat!) being pasta with ketchup instead of actual tomatoes.

Today I'd like to present something that takes the cake in so many ways. There's a bakery chain called 提拉米蘇 (the Chinese transliteration of 'Tiramisu') that is hugely popular, to the extent where people line up outside the shop or wait for several weeks to receive their online cake order.

Here's what the object of people's desire looks like - the Tiramisu cake:

They even have a diagram explaining the cake's structure: a base of digestive biscuit, two layers of mousse, a layer of chocolate cake, and to top it off cocoa powder imported from Malaysia.

Let's attribute the fact that half the ingredients don't show up in traditional tiramisu recipes to artistic interpretation.

What really takes the cake is how they bend the largely unknown and unspectactular history of tiramisu into a deeply "meaningful" story based on a mistranslation and an awful lot of imagination (a.k.a. 唬濫 - Taiwanese for "bullshit"):

The box of the above

The legend of Tiramisu:

In an age of battles, in a foreign country beaten by wars.

A wife uses the only dairy that is left and her love to make a dessert for her husband who is heading for the battle: “Tiramisu” (meaning “take me with you”)

“Even though you cannot take me, please take my pious heart with you. I shall devote my sincerest of hearts to prayer: please bless my beloved husband. Come back unharmed.”

It's a legend of love and romance ...

Can you feel the Tiramisu coming back up yet?

Google translate:

"Hello friends! Hygienist engaged fresh and the other half we decided to look for a producer of events. We want to get married next July, and we got a proposal interesting spring Zimmerman - Event management, incidentally, we're looking in center, about 300 guests at a cost of from about 250 shekels per serving. Does anyone know the Mye.co.il, producing weddings can give me an opinion? Are there other places in the center (from the streets and Herzliya) I should check to produce a wedding? What next? God what a click ... We also need to find halls for events or events producer would see that? There are two months of his nephew and his Bar Mitzvah to organize an event, I hope Lhtshms that produces events. We also hear the opinions and recommendations produced by other events and weddings. Thanks everyone!, Lily"

Sherman Island
September 8, 2009
Loic

Went to that funny Sherman Island kite surfing spot this Monday afternoon. As the name suggests, you need to cross a bridge to get there, I didn't know this one yet! I already knew the Richmond, Golden Gate, Bay, Dumbarton and San Mateo bridges, never heard of the John A Nejedly bridge before!

Anyway, I've posted a few pictures of the spot:

Sherman Island Kitesurfing

I've also updated my map of kitesurfing spots! It's a pity I cannot mark the spots I've been while in Taiwan, Borocay & Bali. I guess this feature will become available as Google Maps progresses. Google is taking over the world!

More about Sherman Island: Pay the parking fee and go park in the second parking lot. You need to launch your kite close to the parking area then walk 300 feet on a trail to the delta. Once in the water you have 3 seconds to go upwind otherwise you will crash into the bushes! Water is very flat, except for the small waves caused by motor boats. There are a coupe of buoys you need to avoid, and also don't try jumping under the high voltage electric lines!!

This description may sound terrible so far but actually the spot is great: Flat water, ample space. For some reason the other kite surfers prefer staying close to the shore and high voltage lines (???), so you have the rest of the spot just for yourself! Refer to windguru.cz to know when the wind is going to pick up and add +5 to the numbers they give you. For instance, I went riding when the forecast showed 8 knots, but we definitely had much more than 10 knots (otherwise my kite wouldn't fly).

Labor Day
September 6, 2009
Loic

I realize I haven't posted anything on my blog for weeks (months?), partly because living in the US is more "conventional" than Taiwan, and partly because I now spend more time on Facebook than updating my blog. During the week I'm also spending a lot of time kitesurfing on 3rd Avenue, which is very exciting because I can practice during the week. It's not too far from the office: I need to cross the Dumbarton bridge, take the 101 North and exit @ San Mateo. Tomorrow (Monday) is Labor Day and I will go try another kitesurfing spot: Sherman Island. I'll take my camera in case there's some nice scenery! 3rd Av is not really nice, here are a few pictures:

dsc_7913.jpg

Here is the San Mateo bridge, just next to the kitesurfing spot:

dsc_7918.jpg

The goal of these pictures was actually to test the field of view of my new 20mm lens. I bought it to the office the other day and passed it around (there are lots of photo-amateurs in our department), here is a picture of myself in the office:

DSC_7857.JPG

(I hope my mom notices the fruits on my desk: No doughnuts!)

I've started building a map of kitesurfing spots but I found a very powerful website, localkitespots.com, that is extremely complete and will become my new reference in the future.

Back to Berkeley
August 8, 2009
Loic

July's been very busy. A lot of work, but also a lot of drama with my roommate. Turns out the guy had a psychological conditions that made him quite hard to live with. I stayed there for two months then moved out at the end of July. I tried finding another share in San Francisco but it turned out lots of people were looking. So in the end I decided to look for a 1 bedroom apartment in the Bay Area. It's the same price as a share in SF!

Anyhow, I am back to Berkeley! I first moved to Berkeley less than 3 years ago, when I started this blog (in French at that time!). I can't believe all the things I did over the last 3 years - my internship @ Logitech, my diploma, Taiwan, now the US again...  but this time as a permanent employee, no more $2000-cars!

I've received all my household goods from Taiwan last week but I still haven't cleaned up the flat - here is how it looks:

I took quite a few pictures at the San Carlos "Vertical Challenge" air show last weekend! Posted them over there:

San Carlos Hiller Museum Vertical Challenge

On Sunday I went to Ikea in Emeryville and then I was glad to serve as a tourguide for my roommate in Berkley - She's from San Diego and hadn't been to Berkley yet! Telegraph street, coffee on Euclid street, University avenue, the campus, the Campanile, and Treasure Island on the way back. One more proof that I'm ready to welcome people visiting me in the Bay Area! By the way, my first Taiwanese visitor is coming soon...

Road Trip
October 18, 2006
Raphael
October 6th was the last of my internship. I've been working for Logitech in Fremont (Bay Area) for 6 months. At least the internship ended like it started: under the rain :) Actually we had sun all the time in between. So no need to complain. This internship was very interesting for me since it was the first one. Plus  it was in a foreign country. Well I've already been to the USA a few times before but only on holidays on the East  coast. It was nice to see what the West coast looks like. Besides that I learned a lot of different stuffs: how the  work life is, how it is to work in a high-tech firm...
My co-workers were very nice, specially the other swiss guys with whom I
hung out with. It felt a bit like being home :)

On saturday I began my road trip with Loic (another intern). We left berkeley around 8:30am and arrived in Vegas around 5-6pm. We had to make a stop somewhere since the grand canyon is pretty far away. We partied in the studio 54 again. It was fun as usual.
On Sunday Adel joined us in Vegas. He was coming from San Diego. We then left for the Grand Canyon. We  went to a small town called Peach Springs where some rafting tours were organized on the colorado river. It was really great. We went through rapids in the morning and got all wet. In the afternoon it was all quiet so that we could take a few pictures. Then we did a small helicopter ride to get back to the bus to take us back to the hotel.
The night we left for the Grand Canyon National Park. We arrived pretty late and there were no rooms available in any hotel. We then decided to sleep in the cars. It was really cold. Only Loic had a sleeping bag, and we didn't have much warm cloths. Adel and I had to take a ride at 4am in the morning in order to heat up the car :)
We woke up around 7-8am and started to look for a room for the night. We found one in a hotel with sauna and jaccuzzi. Don't have to tell you that we took advantage of that at night, right after entering the Park and seeing the nice views of the Canyon.
Adel had to leave on thursday since he had his master's presentation to do on friday. So we decided to go a bit further south. Next stop was Flagstaff. There are many things to see: meteor's crater, ruins, volcano... It was pretty nice. On thursday Adel left our little road trip but Loic and I kept on moving.
Next stop was Monument Valley. It's in Utah. We visited that on Friday morning. The rocks have nice shapes. In the afternoon, we drove until
Bryce Canyon. We arrived Friday night. Unfortunately, on Saturday it was raining so we decided to wait for the next day to visit this canyon. We spent the day in Cedar City. The biggest city near the canyon. It's like 1-1:30 drive. There wasn't much to do since the weather was pretty bad so we ended up watching a movie. It was nice to relax a little bit too :)
Sunday the weather was better. In the morning we went horse riding through the Red Canyon. There was some fog but it went away later in the morning. In the afternoon we went hiking through the Bryce Canyon. It's really worth seeing it: better than the Grand Canyon. We also had some snow in the top of the canyon since it rises till a bit more than 9100 feet.
Late afternoon, we left for Zion Canyon. It's also very nice since you can walk near the Virgin River which goes through the Canyon.
It gives another view over the canyon.
After that we started our journey back to Berkeley. We made a stop in the usual city: Las Vegas. We took a room in the
Luxor hotel (the one which is like a pyramid). It costed $100 since we went there during the week. That's why it was pretty cheap. We also did the rollercoaster on New York New York and went to see a show which wasn't very good but it was the only one with seats left.

I really enjoyed this road trip with my friends. We had a great time and very pretty views of the canyons. It's better to take a look
at the pics than explaining those breathtaking views of the different canyons. We did around 3000 miles (more or less 5000km) in
10 days. After this great road trip, I now have to prepare to go back to Switzerland early next week. I'll miss the bay area and all the people I met here.

Hello, I haven't posted anything for some time now. But it doesn't mean I'm not doing anything :)

This weekend two friends (Adel and Cedric (whom I hadn't see for almost 6 months!)) who are doing an internship in San Diego came to visit me. I've been preparing a little bit their arrival in the Bay Area. Adel arrived on Thursday so I just showed him a little bit what's happening in Berkeley at night. We went to a couple of bars to finally end up in Kip's. We danced and drunk a little bit. We met Loic there and stayed until the bar closed. This means around 1:30-2am...
On Friday, I had to work so Adel was on his own to visit the campus and the marina. Later in the afternoon I picked up Cedric at the airport. We ate something and then we went with Loic to the city to party. We went to a club which was pretty empty. They had to close one  dancefloor... But we had fun anyway!
On Saturday, we visited one of the world's most known prison : Alcatraz. It was interesting to see it and knowing people like Al Capone were there. Then we visited Little Italy and a bit of the Financial District. Saturday night we went to the city (San Francisco) to party. I wanted to try a new club but there was a private party so we got disappointed when arriving in front of the club :) We took a cab to get to Broadway (a street with a lot of clubs) and ended up in a tiny club which wasn't that good.
On Sunday, we went another time to visit San Fran. We took the known cable car and then headed to see the crookedest street
in San Francisco : Lombard Street. Tourist do it by car but we did it by foot :) Then we ate in Chinatown. Cedric has been waiting for this moment for a long time :)
On Monday, we went to the top of the Twin Peaks to enjoy a nice view of San Francisco. After that we went to take a walk in the Haight-Ashbury and the huge Golden Gate Park. We finished our tour by seeing the Golden Gate.

I had a great time showing SF to my friends and I hope they had fun too !

Wedding

Hi !
On Saturday July 29, I went to the wedding of a co-worker, Patrick Miauton. The wedding took place in a winery, Byington Winery. It is located not too far from San Jose.
We arrived there around 3pm to start organizing the wedding : set up the cameras, microphones, music, speakers...
Then we witnessed the union of Patrick, who is swiss, and Karen, who is from Taiwan. They got married by another co-worker who got a license to be able to officially marry the couple. The wedding was very nice and it was fun to see a friend marry Patrick and Karen. I mostly talked to Karen's family since there were more young people. She has a very nice family. A the end of the dinner, we played a game. Some questions were asked and we had to say wether it corresponded to the bride or the groom. At our table was sitting the bride's sister so we didn't do bad at all :)
After the wedding, we went to a club in San Jose called Tasty. It was full so those of us who arrived late weren't able to get in ! It wasn't the best place to celebrate a wedding. It wasn't really the newly weds type of place since it was mostly hip-hop. But when you're with friends, you can always have fun :)

I wish them all the best in their new life together !

Camping in Big Sur
July 10, 2006
Raphael
This week end, Sharon, one of my housemate organized a camping week end. The idea was to get to a camping site in Big Sur on Friday and leave on Sunday. Sharon and some of her friends left on Friday morning to reserve the place. First arrived, first served.
I left Berkeley with Loic, Thomas ( a housemate) and Matthias (Thomas' friend). We left around 8pm because I couldn't get out of work earlier and then we had to buy food for the whole week end. Sharon gave us some instructions on how to get there but the instructions weren't very clear. We drove till Big Sur, around 160 miles, but didn't find the camping site. So we kept driving a little bit till we reached Lucia. We thought there was going to be some people to ask directions to. But there was only a closed restaurant and store... Since we were in Lucia and we already passed Big Sur we thought we missed the panels. So we headed back to Big Sur and stopped in front of a hotel. We went towards a place where there was light and it ended up being just a little room. After some inspections we found a map. We analyze it and find out the camping spot was just a few miles after Lucia...
Then we had another problem, I was running out of gas... Thankfully, the map also pointed out gas stations. We decided to head to the closest station. Which was in the opposite direction of the camping site. When arriving there we noticed we couldn't pay with credit card at the pump. The station was closed so we had to wait for the gas station to open. The gas station was open from 7:59am till 8:01pm.
Thus, we decided to find a place to sleep somewhere, preferably a beach. We found the Pfeiffer Beach a few miles further. Thomas and his friend slept on the beach and Loic and I in the car. I couldn't sleep on the beach, I had no sleeping bag. I was supposed to get it on the camping site... The night was pretty cold so I slept with several cloths on ;)
We woke up around 9:30, ate a breakfast, put gas in the car and headed towards the camping site. We arrived there around 11:30am while we were supposed to be there by 11pm... We did some hiking, but it was really hot so we didn't do the whole trail. Then to cool down, we decided to go to the beach. Once we got there, the fog was all over the place and it was very cold. Sharon started to hesitate if she wanted to stay
another night. She was already cold the night before and on saturday night it was obviously going to be colder (because of the fog). Plus she was a little bit sick.. We made a little vote and finally decided to leave after having a barbeque. I did most of the driving at night. Actually, we noticed that most of the cars coming in the other directions didn't take off their high beams when crossing another car. They even had high beams while following another car... This is crazy and so annoying !
We only did one night of camping but it was fun. And this way I got to see the World Cup final on Sunday :)

Week end in San Diego
July 6, 2006
Raphael
Monday and Tuesday were days off so I went to san diego with another intern from my company, Loic. We stayed at a friend's place, Adel. He lives in La Jolla, a rich neighbourhood of San Diego. Our plane landed a little before 10pm. We flew with United Airlines and the crew was pretty funny. Well, Loic and I were the only ones laughing on the plane :) As soon as we got on the plane, the person said something like "Welcome to the flight going to LA. No just kidding, just doing that to see who's following." We had to take a smaller plane than expected so he's like "Don't worry, the plane didn't shrink, we just changed planes."

Adel came to pick us up at the airport and we directly hit the club. We went to the club "BroadwaY". It's an old
bank converted in a club. It has several rooms with different kinds of music : hip-hop, techno...
On saturday, we went to visit the USS Midway. It's an aircraft carrier that was used in the World War 2 and also Desert Storm. It takes a couple of hours to visit but it's interesting.
Then we decided to party in Tijuana, Mexico. We took the trolley to the border and then took a bus to Tijuana. It costs $3 and the mexican border didn't even looked in the bus. We ate dinner in a restaurant over there but it wasn't good and not even enough to eat. I guess we went to the worst restaurant in Tijuana :)
We went to a club called Safari and by paying the entry you can also go to another club called the mystery club. All drinks were free, just had to pay for the tip. One of the clubs was almost empty and the other one was a hip-hop club.
It was nice and we were almost the only white people in there. Reminded me of the Loft back home. It was interesting when the DJ yelled something like "Throw yo hood up!". Everyone put their hands up and represented a letter or something for their hoods.
We left the club at around 5am and arrived at Adel's place between 8-9am. We didn't really know how to get to La Jolla with public transportations and Loic got stocked at the american border for some time because he was missing a stamp somewhere. He finally got through but never got the missing stamp...
When we arrived at Adel's place we immediately hit the beach. Finally beaches where you can swim, not like in San Francisco where it's too cold :)
On Monday Adel had to work so Loic and I headed to the well known Zoo. It took us around 3h to get there by public transportations since people in the street were giving us wrong information on the buses... The zoo was nice, it is very big. There we met two of my housemates who had the same plan as us for the week end :)

We had a great time in San Diego and I liked the city. Thanks Adel for organizing this great week-end!

Gay Pride 2006
June 26, 2006

This week-end the well known gay pride took place. Since I live near San Francisco, I couldn't miss the parade. Thus, when I was told, that the parade was happening this week end, I had to cancel my plans to go to Lake Tahoe.
On saturday, we didn't know what to do. Some of my roomies and I decided to go to Castro. Castro is the gay neighbourhood of San Francisco (for those who don't know). We went there just to see what it looked like. There were a lot of people of course, some music and alcohol. It was interesting to go to this part of San Francisco since I had never been there. We didn't stay long since we already arrived pretty late.
The real thing was on sunday. The parade started at 10h30 am. We saw the parade until 12h30 pm. Just getting out of the Bart station (the train here), you already saw some persons with panels saying that gays should repent, that they were sinners... Hopefully there weren't many and noone was really paying attention to them. The parade in itself was pretty nice. Many different gay groups like the police, the cheerleaders, etc... Some had some music which was cool. After 2h of standing and watching the parade, we got hungry so we went eating. Then we went to the Civic Center, were there was a little concert and some food to buy. There were persons wearing excentric cloths, guys dressed as girls. There were even guys walking naked in the streets and a couple of girls walking topless. Famous people were in the parade too like San Francisco's mayor and Jennifer Beals who acts in the TV serie called the "L Word". It was kinda fun even though I didn't really fitted in since I am straight. But it's worth it to see the parade at least once.

I've been living in Berkeley for a few weeks so I think it's about time I put some pictures of this city. Well for now I have some of the University since Berkeley is mostly known for it. I find it great since it is really bigger than my university in Switzerland (EPFL) and the buildings are nicer. It also has a lot of grass where you can sit and enjoy a nice Californian weather. UC Berkeley, also called Cal (by the waz I need to get cloths from Cal in order to be more local...), is represented by a bear.

On saturday I went to the beach with one of my housemates and her friend that is here for a few days. We went to Stinson beach for the afternoon. It's supposed to be one of the best beaches in the area. It's actually very nice and it felt good to finally go to a real beach. The last one I went to we had to hike to get there so there was noone there :)
Stinson Beach was full of people laying on the beach and doing the usual stuff. The only problem is that almost noon was going in the water. The water is so cold... But we don't go to the beach without swimming :) So we just went in and out so that we can say we did that. Most of the people in the water were surfers wearing stuff to protect them from the cold water. So it wasn't very encouraging :)

On sunday I met a cousin that lives in San Rafael. Actually, she's a cousin of the 3rd degree so not really close family. Even my parents have never seen her family. Since I don't live far from her place, it was nice seeing her. She lived in the area for a long time so she can show me around.
We decided to go to Napa Valley (with her daughter and her parents). This is the wine country, California is known for wines. We went to two different wineries and did some wine testing. The first one was an italian winery and a winery with lavender. Wines were pretty good even if I don't drink much wine. I even bought a bottle of wine in one of the wineries. I had a nice day visiting and getting to know a part of the family that I had never seen.
Life in the US

Raphael
As most of you know, I've been living in California for over 2 months now. I arrived on March 29th and I immediately had to look for a place to live. Everything needed can be found on this website www.craigslist.com
I decided to find a room in Fremont, this means close to work. My housemate was a 30 year-old Indonesian. He was pretty nice but I got bored in Fremont. I tried going out and we ended up in a bar with cowboys singing karaoke. It was so ridiculous that it was funny...
I stayed in Fremont the time to settle down, find a car, open bank account....
Then I started looking for a new room in a city that has more nightlife. I chose Berkeley since it is close to San Francisco and there are a couple of bars. Actually, these are pretty empty since there are not many students here around summer. But it's still better than Fremont.
I found a room in a house full of young people in Berkeley. I've been living there for 2 weeks now. We are actually 10 persons in the house : 6 guys and 4 girls. It's nice since there are many different nationalities (american, french, german...), everyone is very friendly and do some trips together. The first week-end I stayed here, we went to see a park called Point Reyes north of San Francisco. It has a famous lighthouse and a few beaches but the water is too cold to swim :)
Since you almost can't live in the States without a car I had to buy my first car. It's a 1990 Acura Integra. Pretty old but still runs great. I bought it $2500. I must drive it pretty carefully since I'm selling it back when I'll leave California.
I get to drive it pretty often since I must drive from Berkeley to Fremont to work. That's 30 miles so almost 50 km one way. I have a co-worker also living in Berkeley so we carpool. This means we can use a special lane on the freeway to avoid traffic jams. It's around a 30 minute drive so it's not that far, at least for standards in the bay area :)
Las Vegas
May 31, 2006
Raphael
Hey, welcome to my blog! A little about me. I'm a 22 years-old swiss student. I'm currently doing an internship for Logitech near San Francisco (Fremont) for 6 months. I've already been here for 2 months.

On monday May 29th, it was Memorial Day. A week end of 3 days! We had to do something fun so I organized a trip to Las Vegas. Unfortunately not everyone was able to come but it was a nice week-end.
I left from the bay area with another intern (Loic) and started our 10 hour drive to vegas on friday. Vegas is at almost 600 miles from where we live. We made a stop half way in Bakersfield. In vegas we met my good friend Adel. We didn't gamble too much since we prefered spending our money on buffet (really good one in the Bellagio), parties (MGM club on saturday and the Rain club on sunday).
On saturday, we wanted to go to the Hard Rock Cafe club. They weren't letting anyone in except persons on the list. Adel tried to manage our entry with the boss but since we were 3 guys and no girls he refused. Then we realized, persons on the line getting in, were giving money to the boss. That's when we decided to leave and go to the MGM where we had a lot of fun. There were girls dancing in thongs but also a little something for the ladies :)
Adel was really the man of the week end since he won a little while gambling and all the girls were crazy for him. While being in the MGM club for 5 minutes, a girl was already hitting on him. The day after we were in the line to get in the other club and another girl asks him to take a picture with him. When we got in theclub there were a couple of guys breakdancing. It was pretty good but after a while security came in and stopped the show.
Loic and I didn't have that much success but still got the oportunity to dance with girls (the girls that Adel was willing to leave us :)).

All this said, we had a great time and it was totally worth it to drive 10h each way to spend 2 nights in Vegas.
The pics i didn't want to spend time classifying them so it might not be very good. And I just received the camera so some pics may not be that good. Plus i didn't take all the pictures :)
